Olde Mother Brewing Co. – A more attentive audience was seen at this performance because last week many were distracted by the World Series game on. World Series game on. Powderly thanked the crowd for coming out on a “Tuesday Bluesday”- Olde Mother is becoming a favorite spot of mine to chill and listen to some acoustic music.
Katie Powderly – Solid country with a folky bluegrass twist. Powderly has a soft voice that is always in pitch and in tune with beautifully strummed chords. Accompaniment on picked lead guitar parts and backup vocals comes from Derek Kretzer (The Plate Scrapers) who adds even more depth to the lovely sound.
Covers through many different outlets provide insight into the influence of the original songs. Powderly called “Act Naturally by Buck Owens a “sad beautiful song” and did a remarkably good job on a somber tune by Townes Van Zandt. An incredible version of “Johnny & June” by Truckstop Honeymoon really resonated with me.
Powderly and her band (The Unconditional Lovers) recently opened for The Steel Wheels at Weinberg Center for the Arts and they have a new album coming out next year.
